What is Meter?

The meter (symbol: m) is the fundamental unit of length in the International System of Units (SI).

Originally intended to be one ten-millionth of the distance from the Earth’s equator to the North Pole, it is currently defined by the speed of light in a vacuum. A meter is officially defined as the length of the path traveled by light in a vacuum during a time interval of 1/299,792,458 of a second.

Common Uses

The meter is the standard unit of measurement used globally in almost all fields, except in a few countries that still predominantly use Imperial units (like the United States). It’s used for everything from human height and room dimensions to racing distances and geographical features.

What is Foot?

The foot (symbol: ft; plural: feet) is a unit of length in the British imperial and United States customary systems of measurement.

Since the International Yard and Pound Agreement of 1959, the foot has been defined as exactly 0.3048 meters. A single foot is comprised of 12 inches, and there are 3 feet in a yard.

Common Uses

The foot is primarily used in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. It is commonly used to measure human height, building dimensions, and short distances. In aviation, altitude is almost universally measured in feet around the world.
